Mets re-sign team legend Tom Seaver, set for rehab start Thursday in Syracuse

It’s been a nightmare start for the New York Mets in 2026 so the club is reaching back into its history in an effort to get the season back on track.

Team owner Steve Cohen announced today that the club had signed the three-time Cy Young winner to a one-year deal for $7.5 million in an effort to rebound from a 9-19 start.

“Tom’s one of the best Mets ever. It makes sense to bring him and his arm back into the fold for the club after our rough start,” Cohen said. “This will not be a lost season for the Mets.”

Seaver last pitched for the Mets in 1977 and hung up his spikes in 1986 after stops in Cincinnati, Chicago, and Boston with a second stint in Queens sprinkled in.

He is set to take the bump for a rehab start Thursday in AAA Syracuse against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Mets manager Carlos Medonza said Seaver will be capped at 60 pitches.

When reached for comment Seaver had nothing to say as he passed away in 2020 and was still in a state of post-cremation.
